Sweet Remembrance: The Confectioners of Sheffield General Cemetery

Date – Tuesday 23rd January 2024, 7.30 – 8.45pm

Cost – £5 (cash only on the door, no online booking)

Venue – Kenwood Hall Hotel, Kenwood Rd, S7 1NQ

Confectioner researcher, Andrew Littlewood, will shed light on the stories of some Sheffield confectioners who now rest in the Sheffield General Cemetery. These include Charlesworth, Brookes, Simpkin, Pike, Reckless, Melhern and Butler.

Equally, the products of the confectionery industry, like British wine, twelfth cakes, funeral biscuits, turtle soup, comfits and ‘spice’, are just as fascinating as the people that made and sold them.

As well as Nether Edge History Group’s recent publications (Local Walks and NENG’s 50th anniversary book), the friends of Sheffield General Cemetery are bringing their book Sweet Remembrance – The Confectioners of Sheffield General Cemetery for purchase before and after the talk.

Directions – Follow signs around the hotel to their Laura Ashley rooms inside old Kenwood House

Refreshments – Hotel Bar available for drinks before and after the talk.

Car Parking – Plenty of on street parking. Free parking outside the Laura Ashley rooms if you supply car registration details..
